Media Casualties Mount As War Success Continues

The ranks of print, web and broadcast pundits and journalists continue to be decimated by enemy action as the war progresses. The Evolution Of Democracy

Twenty years ago, a political science professor at the University of Michigan came out with a seminal book titled the Evolution of Cooperation.

In it, he described how cooperative strategies could have evolutionary-beneficial consequences, and thus be selected for. In particular, via a series of computer game tournaments in which algorithms were submitted to play an extended iterated prisoner's dilemma, he identified a strategy that was the most successful called "Tit for Tat" (TFT). (Read the link for information as to how the game works.)

HITLER'S LEGACY: ISLAMIC ANTI-SEMITISM IN THE MIDDLE EAST

A transcript of a very informative lecture by Matthias Kuentzel. A short synopsis can't do the lecture justice, but the basic point is that while there was always anti-Jewish sentiment in the Muslim world, it also was based on the notion of Jews as an inferior group that Mohammed had defeated militarily. Anti-Semitic visions of powerful Jews being behind the world's problesm, and plotting to control the world, found most prominently in the Hamas charter, entered the Muslim world via the Muslim Brotherhood, who in turn took those ideas from the Nazis, which spent significant effort and money propagating them in the Middle East. This all started well before the creation of the State of Israel, belying the notion that the Israel-Palestinian conflict caused modern Muslim anti-Semitism. Thanks to Scholars for Peace in the Middle East for the pointer. Read More

Saddam Risked His Life for WMD Secrets

The Washington Post reports on a story leaked to Spain's El Pais about a meeting between President Bush and the former Spanish president Jose Maria Aznar weeks ahead of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. It's interesting to note how Bush discusses Saddam's signals that he might accept exile from Iraq.

El Pais provides the Spanish language transcript here. And here's Bush on the chances that Saddam Hussein might choose exile instead of war [translation mine]:

...The Egyptians are talking to Saddam Hussein. It seems he's indicated that he'd be ready to go into exile if he's allowed to take $1 billion dollars and all the information he wants about weapons of mass destruction. Gaddafi has told Berlusconi that Saddam Hussein wants to leave. Mubarak tells us that in that case, there's a strong possibility that he'd be assassinated.

Worshipers Of A Bloodthirsty God

Humans are clearly well-suited to some economic, political, and religious systems and not to others. Some systems--such as Islamic jihadism with its recycled socialist and communist politics -- are nothing more than a Procrustean bed of torture, as they try to adjust human nature to fit their "perfect" religion and the will of their bloodthirsty god.

In every case where totalitarian ideologies are put in place, whether they are religious or not, the result has been either catastrophic human misery and death (when the ideology is applied ruthlessly and viciously) or stagnation and decay (when applied nonchalantly and accepted passively).Read More

Terrorism the main challenge to Europe

The survey said that 70 percent of Germans felt they might suffer a terror attack, a 32 percent increase over 2005. That brings the fear of terror among Germans close to the level of fear among Americans, which stood at 74 percent in a similar survey

On Wednesday, a report by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) gave further cause for concern.

The growth of international terrorism will remain one of the main challenges for 2008 after the recent discovery of terrorism plots in Europe, the report said. Read More

Kelly's general theory of scandal relativity

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jack Kelly has a bang-up column occasioned by the resignation of Senator Craig. Both Kelly and the Post-Gazette deserve some kind of special recognition for letting these reflections see the light of day in the hard copy of a mainstream newspaper: [M]edia bias is not the main reason why Republicans suffer more from scandals. Democratic voters expect Democrats to steal on their behalf. Lawmakers are judged on the basis of how many goodies from the federal treasury they can shower on their constituents. The typical Democratic voter doesn't mind terribly if their senator or congressman takes something for himself along the way. (Time Magazine's story on Rep. [Alan] Mollohan's re-election was headlined, "Pork Trumps Scandal.")Read More

Does Prime Minister Kaczynski think he can really pull an election victory off against numbers like those?

Does he really think that people who think that he is Poland's worst prime minister will reelect him to the post?

It is more likely that he is simply playing his game of hardball and is out to pull members from Samoobrona and possibly LPR so that he both weakens them and increases the number of people that he has in a minority government.

Kaczynski has too much to lose to chance new elections.

If he is patient he can steadily pull people from Samoobrona and LPR to get either a near majority or majority vote in the Sejm.

Manipulative Detention In Poland?

I am Ali Manzarpour, the British businessman who was illegally detained in Poland for 22 months on an extradition request from the USA, for allegedly violating the American trade embargo against Iran. Finally, the Warsaw Circuit Court decided to accept the facts which were clear from the beginning, that there were no reasons for me to be extradied to the USA, as my acts were lawful according to EU, British and Polish laws, and released me last December. Throughout my detention, I learned of so many deceptions, lies, fabrications of evidence and breaches of the proper legal process. I could never believe that in the EU such practices were still so common. It was widely reported in the media that my case was linked to the case of Mr. Edward Mazur, and Poland considered me an "ace" in their hands to secure the extradition of Mr. Mazur from the USA. Indeed I have documentary proof that Mr. Ziobro was going to discuss my case with the US authorities when he travelled to the USA last September to press for Mr. Mazur's extradition. Shortly after that visit, Mr. Mazur was arrested.

My arrest and detention was in complete violation of EU law and Poland's Treaty obligations, and this was noted by the European Commission. But, for 22 months, the Polish authorities refused to listen in a vain effort to secure Mr. Mazur's extradition and to prove their subservience to the USA.

Although I am free now, the case has not ended and it will not end till European courts have considered the actions of Poland over this matter.

I must say that during my arrest, scandalous lies and libels were freely published in the Polish media probably based on 'leaks' from the aurthorities. They called me a 'spy' among other disgraceful names, whereas I was in fact in Poland to restart the production of a defunct aircraft programme (Mewa) in Mielec.

I hope that this will be a lesson to other EU businessmen who consider Poland as a good place to invest and to live (as I was).

Poland has paid such a high price in its vendetta against Mr. Mazur. Perhaps I too was part of that price. But, this price was also the anger of the European Commission, British authorities, and ridicule and disgrace before an American court, which is clear to anyone who reads the Decision of the judge. And to think that Mr. Mazur's case was put together by the best legal brains in Poland!! All this disgrace for what? Doesn't anyone ask the government this?

Who killed Marek Papala?

Patrick Fitzgerald, the US Attorney in Chicago said: ‘While we respect the Judge’s thoughtful opinion, we respectfully disagree with the result’. But in real terms is there a chance to bring Mazur back to Poland for trial? I put the question to former Polish press correspondent in the United States Bartosz Weglarczyk.

‘There is a chance if we present a better case. If you read the judge’s decision, he was not only disappointed but was shocked with the Polish extradition case. If we want to go ahead with the next extradition case we need something much better and I’m not sure we can find it. I talked to an FBI agent last night who was involved in the case and he told me that the US Prosecutor’s Office will be talking to the Polish government and trying to decide if they have a better case. Somehow I don’t believe it.’
